Optimal design of the ideal grounded tuned mass damper inerter for comfort performances improvement in footbridges with practical implementation considerations

The paper focuses on the optimal design of grounded tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI) in footbridges and some practical implementation issues. An procedure is implemented for perfectly ideal TMDI (infinite stiffness connection at ground plus linear nondissipative inerter). based reduced-order models footbridge by assuming frequency ratio damping factor as parameters, a given number values inertance ratios aiming minimizing maximum acceleration response system users' comfort improvement under performance criteria defined Human-induced Vibration Steel Structures (HiVoSS) guidelines. applied to an existing suffering excessive human-induced vibrations. After has been found, its performances are assessed avail fully 3D finite element model case-study footbridge, which calibrated toward situ experimental identification campaign. Alternative proposals control analyzed. Finally, sensitivity analysis carried out regarding deviations from initial assumption system, varying inerter. Results show that proposed makes very efficient changes drop beneficial effect TMDI, also if consequences such errors less than ones occurring classical TMDs detuning or malfunctioning.
